I’m leaving on a jet plane to head to Chicago for the Financial Bloggers’ Conference. I’ll be speaking on Sunday about taking your brand Beyond Blogging (will share some of my presentation next week), as well as a panel on working with traditional media. The prep for the kids tips for making the transition smooth for your kids), making a list of things to get done while I’m away, and tackling our laundry was the hard part, the packing for the trip was the easy part.
I’m kind of a neat freak when it comes to my closet. I hang clothes by sleeve length, and color (though I have to redo it about once a month), so packing for the conference was simple. I knew the dress would be business casual, and there would be opportunities to dress up in the evening (I’m all over any opportunity to dress up), so I packed comfortable but business appropriate outfits.
5 Tips to Pack an Effortless Wardrobe
1.Choose a Color Palette: Choose a color palette to start. For fall I love orange, yellow, red, brown and deep purples or pinks. This means you can mix and match outfits easier based on your mood.
2.Simple Shoes: Keep your footwear simple, comfortable, and again stick with your palette. Choosing neutral shoes is always your best bet, but make sure you throw in one fun pair like a killer pair of red pumps. Make sure you have one pair of flats both to keep traveling easier, and keep them in your bag for those necessary footwear changes on a long night.
3.Carry it On: In order to save money and not overpack I use a carry on bag for trips that are 1-4 days. Anything more than that usually requires a large suitcase for me (mostly because my shoes are giant). While I was waiting on my plane I was asked to check my bag for free-seems like a win-win to me. Checking it and not having to pay a fee!
4.Layer it up: You may know I’m a huge fan of layering, but never moreso than when I travel. Temperatures from airport to plane, conference room to board room vary so greatly carrying cardigans, jackets or even a blazer will be a huge help.
5.Bag in a bag: I always pack my large tote from Banana as my purse since I can put my laptop and other electronics in my bag alongside my wallet and 90 million other things i need. I always put a purse in my bag so I don’t have to lug around a large tote everywhere I go.
