Fashion Friday: New Year’s Eve

December 30, 2011

in fashion,holiday

I’ve never been a big New Year’s Eve girl. Especially since we have kids (and have for 14 years-eek!) New Year’s Eve usually involves one or both of us falling asleep on the couch before the ball drops. I can vaguely remember waking up in the middle of the night at various times over the years (usually to comfort someone) and saying “Happy New Year,” in a sleepy haze.

We also happened to get married on New Year’s Day (and no neither of us ever forgets the date!) so we also mumble a Happy Anniversary-and similarly our anniversary is usually pretty low-key.

Now that the kids are older though, and have really gotten into the holiday spirit they are always excited to celebrate New Year’s Eve, so we keep it simple by celebrating early (picking another location as our ‘New Year” based on the time we want them to go to bed), and our celebration usually involves fun finger foods, sparkling cider, and shouting “HAPPY NEW YEAR,” before tucking the kids into bed.

If you’re a parent it’s likely you’ll either be at home, or at a friend’s house versus staying out late and spending a small fortune on a New Year’s Eve ticket or dinner. Personally I’d much prefer to go out another night, save a ton of $, and have it be quieter. Yes, I’m part senior citizen. ;)

Casual and chic is a great choice for a low-key family friendly (and cheap!) New Year’s Eve just add a little sparkle or bling to make it more festive.

I picked up a pair of Denizen jeans from Target this week ($27.99) and love the way they fit. High enough to cover my post 4 kids belly without being ‘mom jeans.’

Pairing jeans that are comfy like these, or jeggings (you probably already have a pair), or another pair of your favorite jeans with one of these tops would be a fun and affordable look.

Tanks by Gap at ShopStyle

This sparkle tank ($19.99) with a blazer or comfy cardigan may be all the bling you need.

Longsleeve Tops by Gap at ShopStyle

This metallic blouse ($39.99) with jeans or sleek black pants is comfy without being too casual.

Longsleeve Tops by J.Crew at ShopStyle

This glimmering blouse ($59.99) from J. Crew is another comfy but festive option. Paired with understated accessories it has all the sparkle you’ll need.

Flats by Xhilaration at ShopStyle

Add a bit of shine to your outfit with these fun flats from Target ($19.99) in black of silver.

Platforms by Mossimo at ShopStyle

If heels are more your style consider Target for fun and fabulous shoes that don’t break the bank. Just make sure to pack a pair of flats if you plan to dance the night away.

Remember you can always use what’s in your closet too, and just layer on some sparkle to make your outfit more festive. If you are shopping for something new consider the sale racks since many offer deeper discounts as stores make way for Spring merchandise (already).

Most likely I’ll be wearing my new jeans, and a fun top and by the time midnight hits I plan to be in bed to get up early the next day for a big trip I’m taking. :) (more on that tomorrow)

What are you New YEar’s Eve plans?
