Mother’s Day is coming soon and with it my own Mom is celebrating her birthday. Relax Mom, I won’t tell anyone you’re turning 39…again.
I may poke fun that my Mom is nearly my age, but she has always been ‘younger’ than me in so many ways. Her attitude, her energy, and her enthusiasm for life always left me in the dust. I have always been in awe of the way she can smile through it all and she has this way of making people feel at ease.
I feel like in many ways we’re opposites-I’m happier to sit at home with a book while she’s more at ease in a crowd. I’m always being overly cautious and she’s able to not just go with the flow but direct it. She thrives being busy and active, I’d rather take a nap or curl up on the couch with popcorn and a TV show. Every one of my friends who met her would find her to be incredibly personable and lovely, some even confiding in me that they were jealous they didn’t have a mom that was so cool.
We had our disagreements about small things, I occasionally got in trouble (my most memorable violation was cutting school to go study at the library—NERD), but no matter what I always knew she loved me. She would tell me multiple times a day, but she also showed it in all the wonderful ways moms do. Even now as an adult when she comes to visit she takes care of me and more importantly she takes care of my family. She loves to do it and I know they’re in good hands when she comes to visit-they’re sure to have plenty of fun, good food (she always puts out a great spread of food), and of course get spoiled a bit.
As an adult it’s pretty amazing to finally have the relationship I think we both always wanted. We’re friends now, not just mother and daughter. We can laugh, bond over how challenging teenagers can be (although I think we have both had it pretty easy), and we have a joint love of good food and good company.
I lucked out in the mom department, so I will be sending my Mom something special this year just as a small thank you for all she does. While I know I can never repay what she’s given me and done for me I can pay it forward to my own family and send her a little appreciation as well. Maybe this gorgeous blooming rose and lily bouquet? She’ll just have to wait and see!
