Finding fun educational games online isn’t always easy, especially when it comes to games for kids that are 7 and up. Our kids have some go to games and sites they use, but I’m always on the hunt for something new to keep them entertained while they’re learning.
Enter Animal Jam. Not only is it a fun game but I love their goal-to inspire children to explore and protect the natural world outside their own doors, making science accessible and fun.
Animal Jam: Educational Online Game for Kids
It’s simple to play. Your child just heads to AnimalJam.com and can play for free. They will enter info about themselves (birthdate and a screen name and password) as well as your email. You may need to help younger kids with these steps, but once that’s done they’re set to play.
Once they’ve started they get to choose their own character and a name for their character, as well. In addition, they go through a brief tutorial that will explain how they can customize their character and how to play the game. They even have their own ‘den’ which they can decorate how they choose with a variety of fun furnishings (ice cream tables, anyone?).
The games all focus on learning about science. Below is a photo of a chemistry set that kids can experiment with.
More than Online Play:
In addition, to the online playworld where your kids can learn and have fun, Animal Jam offers educational resources. Animal Jam Academy ties in the fun of their animal world with science experiments, videos, and more that they can do offline.
Animal Jam was created in partnership with National Geographic. Players can collect fun facts in their Journey Books, learn about Animal Conservation in Kimbara Outback, and ask real scientists questions.
It’s perfect for the little science lover or animal lover in your house.
Parental Control:
Animal Jam shared that safety options are constantly being optimized based on parent feedback. Parents can currently control their child’s chat settings, plus their ability to gift or trade items. Parents can also view their child’s discipline history and their login history.
Animal Jam also regularly produces educational content for players and their parents about digital citizenship and online safety, ensuring our players are aware of how to be safe online.
Cost:
Free to play, under $60/year for membership. It’s free to play, though you can pay under $60 per year for membership which offers:
- Weekly Diamond Membership Gift
- Adopt and Customize All Virtual Pets
- Access to All Animals in Jamma
- All Accessories and Dens
- Access to Member-Only Parties and Adventures
Play Value:
The extras that members receive are a good value if you child enjoys playing the game and going on the adventures, adopting pets, and wants access to the members only items.
I would recommend trying it out first to see what your child thinks, and how much they use it. You can buy them a membership for their birthday or another special occasion. You may even want to try it out for a month first for $5.95.
It may be a game, but kids are learning about animals the whole time. I’ll be back to share one more post from Animal Jam about some of the fun offline activities we tried.
Do you think your kids would like a game that’s all about animals?

I hope they enjoy it as much as my kids. I’ll be back soon with a post about their offline science activities, too.
