There’s a running joke in our house that we’ve spent too much money on our children’s mouths for them to ever talk back to us. Between dental issues (thanks to genetics), braces, retainers, and more braces to come we’re talking big bucks.
What’s no joke would be throwing all those dollars out by not taking care of our teeth and the dental appliances (like removable braces, retainers, mouth guards, and night guards) we use for both correction and protection. Not only are they costly to buy and to replace (just ask my teen who had to pay to replace his retainer), but they also need regular cleanings to keep them from causing more harm than good.
Bacteria from your mouth can hang out on dental appliances and get stuck on teeth all night long. That could spell even more dental trouble and more costs to fix the damage. While we are pretty careful about cleaning even with the best methods I wasn’t able to get off all the build up. So when Fresh Guard™ asked us to try their product I may have gotten a little too excited at the thought of cleaning them up.

Fresh Guard™ Review
We received a pack of goodies to try from Fresh Guard™ including a 24 pack of the soak and 20 wipes that are perfect for on the go cleaning. The products are for use with retainers, mouth guards, night guards, and removable braces.
Fresh Guard™ soak:
I’ll be honest my son’s retainer (and my night guard) were gross with a capital G. Despite regular cleaning they had build up on them that just wouldn’t come off. The soak not only got off all the crud but all the yellowing on my son’s retainer, too. His took more than one soak (the directions say that significant build up may take more than one soak), but we had similar results after the second soak.
I’ll spare you a before pic, but here’s the gloriously clean after. Now I don’t gag when I put my nightguard in and I don’t have to cringe when I see my son’s retainer.
How to Use the Soak: You simply take a clean, empty container like a glass or cup and add enough warm water to submerge your appliance. Dump in one packet and watch it do its’ magic. Add your appliance. Soak for 5 minutes. When you’re done the solution will be clear and you can rinse it thoroughly before using it or storing it until your next use.
Fresh Guard™ wipes:
The wipes are super easy to use and perfect for travel. They also leave your device with a minty fresh taste. I use these every day when I’m traveling to make sure my device is thoroughly cleaned and bacteria-free.
How to Use the Wipes: You simply wipe in all the crevices and nooks with the wipe wrapped around your finger and when you’re done you can pop it right back in your mouth. Easy peasy.

I would definitely follow the instructions on the box. When we cleaned my son’s retainer for the first time with Fresh Guard we soaked it twice. It definitely needed it!
Haley Bennett says
I didn’t know but one dental service that many dentists provide is cleaning your retainer, braces, and mouthguards. However, didn’t know I could clean my dental appliances at home. I really need to clean my mouth guards, so I think I will try soaking them when I get home. Can I soak my guard for longer than five minutes at a time or would it be better to use the soak two different times?
