During a recent visit to Charlottesville, Virginia I sought out a great downtown location for a visit with my Mom. I happened on the Oakhurst Inn by chance, and I’m so happy I took the time to read the reviews and look into the Inn. It looked right up our alley. Luxurious, but modern, and most importantly the location was great.

It’s not a typical ‘inn’ or hotel though. It’s a series of buildings on a residential street near the UVA campus. The Inn is designed to meld vintage charm and modern amenities, and it gets it so very right.

The room we stayed in featured an oversized king bed with a gorgeous headboard that held two wall lamps, outlets, and a small bedside shelf that folds up. Though the room was cozy with the bed taking up most of the space, but it also had three closets (two in the eaves, one full size closet), a desk that was perfect for working, and a TV for late night HGTV watching before bed. The floors are all wood, but it was still warm enough even on in the rain and cold that was happening outside when we visited. The bathroom was all modern with a huge glass enclosed shower, toilet, and small wall sink. It was just well-sized and the shower was amazing.

But we know what’s really important-the bed. If you have a terrible night of sleep no amount of charm will make that better. The bed itself was extremely comfortable. Plush but firm with bedding that was clean and white to offset all the wood and charm of the room. It was simple, but soft. I got a great night’s rest which is always challenging for me when I’m away from home.
The Inn is within walking distance to much of the campus and about a 20 minute walk from the Downtown Mall area. As the sidewalks are literally steps outside your door it’s a pleasant walk through the campus and then nearby shops and restaurants to reach the Downtown Mall.

While we didn’t have much time to explore the area we did get in a bit of sightseeing and a few meals, but it definitely left me wanting to come back again to explore all the amazing food and shops I saw along the way.

Prices vary, but this is a higher end option in a prime location in downtown. You could spend similarly to get a nice chain hotel room or spend less by looking outside downtown. For the charm, service, and location it’s worth the splurge if you’re visiting Charlottesville.
Note: all rooms feature queen or king beds, so the Inn would not be ideal for a family trip unless you’re comfortable booking separate rooms (that don’t connect) or snuggling into one big bed.
We ate at the attached Oakhurst Inn Café (our room was right above it) three times during our stay. The restaurant serves breakfast and lunch as well as a great brunch on the weekends. All the food is locally sourced, and everything we had was delicious. Their coffee was AMAZING. Definitely a must if you’re in the area.
