I’ve talked a bit about how we’re juggling work and fun schedules to create (fingers crossed) an awesome summer. With a little planning and some structure we can make sure I have time for work, the kids have plenty of downtime, lots of new experiences, and we can create new habits this summer.
One of my big goals is to get us all more active this summer. We’re a pretty busy and active family, but instead of just playing I’m talking about getting real exercise. Things like long walks, hiking, running, biking, swimming, and more. Don’t worry we’ll make it fun. I learned a lot coaching a team of young boys to run a 5k this year. They all said ‘when are we going to run?’ even though we’d been running and playing games for weeks!
In an effort to soak up all the fun we have a little formula for summer fun.
Take one sunny day + add a splash of sunscreen X the outdoors + a little planning= summer fun.
I’ve partnered with Banana Boat® to share the ways we’re preparing for summer fun. Last week I shared a summer camp prep list. Whether your kids are going to daycamp or sleepaway camp you’ll be able to figure out exactly what you need this summer with our Camp Prep List. This week we’ll tackle another topic how to be prepared for all of summer’s plans.
Being ready for action whenever and wherever we go is a huge part of my summer prep. Making sure the details are taken care of helps us enjoy those activities more. Things like checking that everyone has a helmet that fits before we go for a bike ride, packing water bottles in the fridge to grab cold water on the go, and making sure we have plenty of sunscreen on hand for our outings.
Tip: Before heading to your family outing, consider how long you will be outside and how many times everyone will need to reapply – remember to bring sunscreen for ALL outdoor activities, hikes, bike rides, swimming or even just a meal out in the backyard.
We prepped by taking a trip to Walmart to pick up some great summer products and pack them in a fun bag by the door to go with us everywhere we go all summer long.
Walmart Summer Central
We headed to Walmart to pick up all the essentials we needed for their sleepaway camping trip this week so they would have everything they need (and then some!).
Walmart is chock full of summer things we need at great prices. It’s literally Summer Central with everything from swimming essentials and camping gear to barbeque needs and all the sunscreen you’ll need this summer.
Our summer bag includes:
Beach towels: A must no matter where we go. They’re great for impromptu picnics, playing at the beach, going to the pool, playing at the park, and more.
Banana Boat® Sunscreens: I like to keep a variety of sunscreen products on hand for different uses. We need waterproof sunscreen for swimming, regular sunscreen for hiking and biking, and those little bottles for when we’re on the go.
Sunscreen Tip: Be sure to apply 1 ounce (2 tablespoons) of sunscreen to you and your kids’ entire bodies 30 minutes before going outside and reapply every two hours or immediately after swimming or excessive sweating.
Bug repellant: To keep those pesky mosquitoes at bay.
Snacks: Keeping a variety of items in our bag when snacktime strikes helps keeps everyone happy. I like to include items like trail mix, granola bars, single servings of nuts, and other items I don’t have to take out of the bag. We can throw some fresh fruit or veggies in to round out snacktime.
Water bottles: I keep a handful of refillable water bottles on hand, too. They are perfect for a quick fillup on the go. Our local trail even has a water bottle water fountain!
Extra clothes: Throwing a few extra clothes in the bag depending on our planned adventures is a great way to make sure we don’t bring home kids covered in wet or muddy clothes. Be sure to throw in extra socks for your little stinker’s feet.
