When I agreed to take on the “title” of Beauty Columnist here at The Centsible Life, I nearly hesitated. I’m a writer and a fashion stylist, but what kind of beauty background could I back my beauty articles with?
But I’m a writer who happens to love hands-on-research, so I’m thrilled to share my learnings through these biweekly beauty posts. Of course, I have to start the research somewhere and while there are lots of great resources available, I’m finding that I’m relying on Andrea Q Robinson’s Toss the Gloss: Beauty Tips, Tricks & Truths for Women 50+ more than the others.
Truth: it’s become my favorite beauty resource.
Hold the broadband. Women 50+?! I’m relying on info for women who are over fifty?! But I’m 41, and most TCL readers are younger. What gives?!
Robinson, who was the CMO of Estee Lauder, president of Tom Ford Beauty and beauty editor of Vogue, knows a thing or two about beauty. And, in her book, she doles out advice for aging naturally, beautifully and sexily to help you feel more natural and confident — no matter your age. Her book, read as a whole, helps women over 50 feel more confident as they age, but her individual tips and suggestions for beauty care and application are priceless for beauties of all ages.
What’s more, her writing style is familiar and friendly. She’s not yelling out instructions like a bootcamp sergeant, she’s explaining natural beauty like you’re at lunch with an admirable friend. Anytime I read a part of her book, I find myself nodding and smiling, realizing that I just learned another great tip to selecting the right shade or applying mascara. And, usually, I’ll be able to follow her tip and race to my bathroom to try it out — because her instructions are simple enough to follow and try.
Who Should Read Toss The Gloss?
If you, like me, enjoy hands-on-beauty research, this is is a resource to keep on your desk, or in your cabinet. Robinson makes beauty and aging fun and easy.
It’s also an excellent gift for a mature friend celebrating a birthday. Gift it with a few brushes or a gift card to a beauty store and you’re providing a valuable book that she’ll enjoy.
Buy it on Amazon for under $20.
